Sustainability

Sustainable Practices, Manufacturing Process, Fabrics, Shipping

Savari Jam is a small, Finnish Australian community, and we are extremely passionate about sustainability and the people around us. We are based on the beautiful Bundjalung Country/Byron Bay, Australia, but our roots originate from Finland, where sustainability is taken very seriously. We grew up in Finland, so sustainability and sustainable practices, like recycling and using sustainable products, have always been part of our everyday lives. After living few months in Australia, we wanted to create something to raise the awareness of plastic pollution here, and find a way to have a business, a community, and a lifestyle and to do it in as sustainable way as possible. So we combined our passion for sustainability, design and fun into one and that is how Savari Jam was born. And why do I like the word "Jam" so much?

If something is really your thing, its your jam.
You can jam with your friends.
Some long boarding competitions are called jams.
Everyone loves jam on toast.
Or jam as it is.
Jam is a great word.
We are so stoked that you are here, welcome to the family!

Manufacturing
For us, having and ethical and sustainable manufacturing process is the number one priority. We work with a small, family business in Bali, who ensure that their workers get paid good, and above average wage, they have great working conditions and normal working hours. To ensure this, we have been there ourselves and seen it ourselves. It took us a long time and we visited many factories to find the one that aligns with our values. The relationship means everything to us so we FaceTime each other often and send each other videos. Our little team in Bali is like our family :)
Our Fabrics
We use only eco-friendly materials to reduce our impact on the climate and limit the amount of water, wastewater and chemicals used in production. Our products are also vegan, as we believe that no animal should be harmed for human consumption. This is very important to us.
When we manufacture our pieces, we try to reduce our waste as much as possible. We make scrunchies out of the leftover fabric, we cut the fabrics carefully to save fabric, we only sample patterns that we have thought for a while  and are sure that we want to use them in our collection. After our first printed collection we decided to draw our own prints, so we can play around with the designs more and come up with the exact design that we are after, just to make sure we don't have to sample more than once.
To support the local community, we use some of our local photographers prints in our apparel.
Our manufacturer recycles and so do we. We want to ensure that the process is as sustainable as possible, and you can feel amazing being part of it too :)

Swim & Surfwear Fabric
We really want to make a difference. We manufacture our swimwear sustainably and ethically in Bali, and we use REPREVE for our swimwear. REPREVE is the leading, most trusted, branded performance fiber, that is made from recycled materials (old fishing nets, plastic bottles, land fill plastic..). REPREVE also ensures reliable, durable quality. This fabric feels butter soft! It feels like silk when you wear it, and it it only stretches a little after using it for a while. We test our pieces in the water surfing, swimming and diving for months before launch them so we can ensure that we only provide you the highest quality pieces! It is also suitable for swimming pools/chlorinated pools. Just make sure you follow the caring instructions and you rinse them after!  Compared to making what's called virgin fiber, making REPREVE offsets using new petroleum, emitting fewer greenhouse gases and conserving water and energy in the process. That makes a big difference for our future. We selected this fabric with sustainability, longevity and texture in mind. We keep our orders small to avoid any excess stock, and use PRESALE method to see which styles are your favourites to predict what we should order the most.
Apparel Fabric
We use 100% organic, ethically produced cotton for our products and you can feel the quality from the softness of the fabric. The design is printed with water-based inks that are free from toxic chemicals, making the design last for ever, and crack-free.
The process follows all the efforts to promote ethical businesses for a sustainable future including Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Carbon Trust, Fair Wear Foundation, and Soil Association. All shirts are created with a carbon-neutral process.
Our apparel is printed locally in Tweed Coast of Northern NSW, in a shed that is run by solar, and built out of recycled materials. Us working together boosts the local businesses and helps the community.
Our shirts are printed to demand to avoid wastage, so please allow 24 to 48 hours for the printing + shipping time.
Packaging
We use only compostable mailers for shipping! So what are compostable mailers exactly? Our mailers are made from mostly plant-based materials such as PLA and a certified compostable material called PBAT (corn starch and bonding agents).
When you receive the mailer, you can cut along the line on the flap and re-use it. Once the mailer has been used up, the last person to receive it can cut it up and put it in their home-compost bin (note, these can't be placed in the recycling bin).

If you don't have a compost bin, you can go to www.sharewaste.com and find someone who has a compost bin near you. Some councils also provide a green organics waste/compost bin.

Once composted properly, the mailer will start to break down and turn into amazing fertiliser for the garden. This takes about 90-120 days (3-4 months).

If the mailers do end up in landfill, they will thankfully still break down. We would never encourage our packaging to go to landfill because it still contributes to wastage, but we know that within a couple of years, the mailers will start to decompose.
